Review of The Halloween Dino Trip

The Halloween Dino Trip is written by Lea Schizas and is the first book in her new series for grades 4-6, The Mystery Adventures of Jillian Waylan. Lea knows how to practice what she preaches. She’s held workshops on writing techniques, such as character building and using strong, active verbs, and keeping the plot moving along–giving the kids a good exciting story they can relate to. Stylistically, Lea uses words creatively. This book shows Lea wearing her writer’s hat firmly on her head.
In The Halloween Dino Trip, the main character, Jillian, has planned a Halloween party for her friends and classmates. She thinks she has things under control. But, boy, is she in for a surprise?! The old, tattered book that was mysteriously placed in the black tent draws Jillian to read a spell that propels the whole group into the past. Way back. All the way back to the time of dinosaurs and the ice age. The spell is accompanied by a flash of light and what sounds like a witch’s cackle. The kids visit three time periods and witness dinosaurs feeding and then the world without dinosaurs, only bones. In the ice age they nearly freeze to death. But here they find an ice slide on which they slid back into the Halloween tent. Now, that looks like a lot of fun. On their dino trip, the friends see science and history come to life—a really cool way for students to learn the facts. Young readers can also try to solve the mystery of the spell book along with Jillian in this and her further adventures.
